What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?
Here in Northern Virginia, our local residents are being taxed to death. We are coming to a point where it's difficult to afford the basics anymore, including gas and even groceries. It is time that we reduce spending and let the taxpayers keep more of their earned dollars.
Why should voters elect you?
I believe I have a comprehensive understanding of the issues that face our community today. Not enough is currently being done to ensure that a high quality of life is protected for our local residents. I believe in a policy that curbs federal spending and battles government waste. As a father of a son in the Air Force and a daughter who attends Marymount University here in the 8th District, I have a good understanding of the burdens that Congress places on families all over our region.
By summer 2011, it is predicted, Northern Virginia could be facing blackouts due to its growing demand for energy. Should Congress intervene now to prevent that possibility, and if so, what is the most important single step it could take?
This is an important federal issue because of the number of government and defense-related agencies located in Northern Virginia. If the state and local governments cannot agree on a path for a new power grid distribution line to adequately supply our region, then Congress needs to act. Criminally polluting plants like the Mirant Coal plant in Alexandria need to be closed immediately. We need to persue new sources of energy, including nuclear, waste to energy, clean coal and increased opportunities to extract proven energy resources.
What impact does immigration have on your district?
Illegal immigration is a very real problem facing our district. It requires a practical solution that is both humane and effective. I fully support those that abide by our laws and enter legally. I believe in a fence and more personnel along the border; however, I oppose an amnesty program.
What steps, if any, should the federal government take to address funding issues for transportation projects?
Not nearly enough has been done to alleviate the explosive transportation problem in Northern Virginia. I am the only candidate in this district that is on the record supporting the Tysons Tunnel project to extend Metrorail to Dulles.
